Seattle Personal Chef Transforms Delivery Services During COVID Using Biodegradable Containers

David Boyd is head chef and owner of Down to Earth Cuisine, a personal chef company in Seattle WA. They typically provide weekly meal service by preparing meals in clients’ homes. When COVID hit, they had to adapt and find new ways to continue serving their clients. David transformed his business overnight and began preparing meals in a commercial kitchen space, while offering contact-free delivery right to clients’ homes. Down to Earth partnered with Green Paper Products to provide compostable, sustainable containers that added value to their organic, made-from-scratch meals.
“The pandemic has created a lot of waste in single-use plastics. We wanted to continue serving clients, but weren’t willing to operate if it meant switching to unsustainable business practices. We look to reduce plastic in everything we do. I started this business to prepare food in a way that is more responsible for the environment.” said David Boyd.
David reached out to his account manager at Green Paper Products to discuss his requirements for his delivery service. After browsing the full range of compostable containers, he selected a dozen products that would help him provide sustainable meal delivery to his clients.
“We prepare meals of all different sizes and need containers in multiple sizes. We love using the PLA 8x8x3 and the 6x6x3 hinged containers because they allow us to stack multiple meals for transport. They are sturdy and rigid so we don’t need to worry about containers opening up during delivery. This is a critical quality when you are transporting custom prepared meals with organic, local ingredients.” said David Boyd.
He continued, “For liquids, we make all of our vinaigrettes, purees, reductions and any other sauces from scratch. The 8, 16 & 32oz Hot Food containers work perfectly for all these needs and more. They stack really well and have a compostable paper lid. This streamlines our packaging process and takes up less room on our storage shelf which saves us money in our rented commercial kitchen.”
Down to Earth Cuisine is located near our distribution facility in Portland OR, so they were able to receive compostable containers the next day. That allowed David to transition smoothly to meal delivery without any downtime in service.
