What are compostable straws made from?

Compostable straws are made from natural plant material, such as plant fiber or Corn PLA. Corn PLA is a plastic-like material made from Corn, so it can be composted in commercial facilities. Paper straws are made from uncoated paper. Compostable straws from Green Paper Products are certified compostable by the Biodegradable Products Institute or CMA for commercial composting.

Are Plastic Straws Recyclable?

Straws which are made from traditional plastics, may be technically recyclable as a material, however, straws are typically too small for the recycling process and end up in landfills or in the ocean as pollution which can harm marine life! It's best to choose a straw that is compostable!

What are compostable plastic straws?

Compostable plastic straws are made from PLA or PHA. PLA is corn-based plastic, made from corn starch. PHA is also a plant based plastic, usually made from vegetable oils or sugar, or glucose. Compostable plastic straws are intended for composting in a commercial compost, and will not break down as intended in home compost.

Do compostable straws break down in the ocean?

Some drinking straws can break down in the ocean environment (marine degradable). These straws are made either from paper or PHA. Green Paper Products offers PHA straws that meet the standards for marine degradable. Some municipalities prohibit all disposable straws, including compostable and Marine Degradable straws. Please check with your local officials to determine if straws can be used in your area.

Are Paper Straws Compostable?

Some paper straws are compostable. Paper straws without a plastic coating are generally compostable depending on the facility taking them. To be sure, choose our certified compostable paper straws, as these have been tested and certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute. Compostable straws are intended for commercial composting, which may not be available in all areas.
