Certifications & Standards

What makes a product certified compostable?

When a product is "certified compostable," it means it has been tested by a third-party organization to break down in a commercial compost facility. These third-party organizations ensure that the product meets acceptable test standards, including ASTM standards.

Our certified compostable products are tested and certified by three main organizations: The Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI®), the Compost Manufacturing Alliance (CMA), and TUV Austria.

Certified compostable products are intended for disposal in a commercial or municipal compost facility, and will not breakdown as intended in a landfill or other environment. Commercial composting is not available in all areas, and different states have different requirements for composting. Please check locally to ensure you have access to commercial composting before purchasing compostable products.

We've made it easy for you to find products that meet a host of certifications all in one place.
