What is bioresin?
Bio-resin is a thermoplastic made from plant-based materials instead of petroleum products. Bioresin is a substitute for PET and polystyrene and can replace polyethylene and polypropylene. Our bio-resin cutlery is made from corn resin (PLA) and talc (a mineral) instead of oil-based materials. Our bio-resin knives, forks, and spoons have high temperature resistance up to 180 - 190 degrees F.
While bioresin shares similar properties to traditional plastic resins, there are also some differences. Bioresin is as strong as traditional plastic, and can be formed and molded into the same shapes and products. Bioresin is also inexpensive, so it is well suited for disposable products. Many, but not all, bioresin products are also compostable in commercial compost systems. Compostable bioresin must meet the ASTM 6400 or 6868 standards, and should also be certified by a third party such as the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) or the Compost Manufacturing Alliance (CMA). Bioresin products are not home compostable, and commercial composting is not available in all areas.
